Come See the Softer Side of the Klan
The Supreme Court just ruled that the Ku Klux Klan should be allowed to adopt a highway.
Now. I am an environmentalist. And I am a good citizen. And I believe in the First Ammendment. But if I see a sign on the highway that says "This road is kept clean by the Greater Eastern Missouri Ku Klux Klan," I am probably going to have to throw some shit out of the car. I might not even be able to help it. This will probably just happen reflexively.
It's a rare opportunity to get to piss off the KKK without having to get all organized or march on Washington or carry cumbersome signs expressing my anti-racist views.
I can't even imagine the bone-chilling effect of driving through that town and seeing such a sign. It's creepy, it's horrifying, it's...normalizing.
People complain that gay marriage "normalizes" homosexuality. Well, more love should be more normal. And pure hate, that should be regarded as morally reprehensible and, most of all, socially awkward.
"See that weird guy? He's gay!" should be replaced with "See that weird guy? He harbors racial prejudice!"
Ewww. Cooties.
All joking aside, how fucking ridiculous is this? They can't just have a sign like that up on the road. They're probably going to have to change their sign policy statewide in order to not have to advertise for the Klan.
I wish I had something powerful and conclusive to say about this, but I don't. It just stands alone as a horrible thing from a horrible past that just won't die, and shows us the most horrible side of our disappointing present time.

Unfortunately Erin, this is going on in Arkansas too. My friend's family is originally from Little Rock and, while visiting them for the holidays five years ago, snapped a photo of a KKK Adopted Roadway sign. Horrible.

Man, are the people at the KKK going to be pissed off when they find out that the highway they adopted is BLACK!
