Retrospecticus

VH-1 should just change their name to List-o-Vision already. For the love of crap, that channel is teaming with mediocre, thrown-together bullshit. It's amazing that in the age of quality basic cable, MTV and VH-1 have plummetted so far as to be bitterly mocked in tandem on this humble blog.

Specifically, I refer to the recent "Best Year Ever" special that took a look back at 2004 in front of a blue screen. Let's just say the production value was far lower than even a generous dose of irony would allow me to appreciate. But before I alienate any New York comedians, let me say that, in general, I'm just sick and tired of the polarized tone of these annual retrospectives that we see so many of from December 26th - January Whenevereth each year.

You can turn to MTV or VH-1 and get some cold, detached, ironic, and usually somewhat obscure presentation of the year's goings on, or you can watch Dateline or Nightline or Frontline or Mainline or 2020 or 60 Minutes or 300 CC's or whatever and get some dramatized, overproduced, grandstanding bullshit that tries to rivet you to death. Few of these presentations attempt to represent the sorrow and the pity side by side with the laughter and the joy. And that's what human existence is like. Some stuff is hard, some is gorgeous, some is miserable, some is funny, and some is only funny when you get to look back on it. Perhaps that complexity isn't as easy to edit into soundbites.

2004 taught us about the arrogance of our wars and the transparency of our false altruism. 2004 showed me that shiny, glossy, over-exposed politics is the ugliest politics of all. 2004 gave the Red Sox the World Series. 2004 brought me to several funerals and lots of great parties.

To sum up, 2004 gave us Good News for People Who Love Bad News and Ashlee Simpson's acid reflux. Life is like that. Some days some people create interesting art, and other days other people...do something else.

Yeah.

Talking of the younger Ms. Simpson, did you see her get BIZ-OOED by 70,000 people at the Orange Bowl halftime show?!?! Man, it was awesome. Orange Bowl officials "explained" that it was just backlash from her SNL snafu. Ha ha, more like backlash from her not being able to sing worth shite. Do you think this is all perhaps part of a grand strategy by Papa Simpson to make Jessica look better? I've got to admit, ever since Ashlee's been around, I've had a vastly increased appreciation for Jessica's talents.

Also, I thought Kelly Clarkson's song wasn't bad.
