after the show it's the oscar party

So I had my show last night, which competed with the Oscars. I was able to catch the tail end (read: only interesting awards) of the whole heavily scripted evening.

Let me start by saying that I believe Chris Rock to be one of the funniest stand-up comics ever. When he hosted the MTV VMAs the first time, it was definitely outstanding awards television. But the networks somehow manage to suck the juice out of even the very juiciest people. I thought the whole thing turned out as icky and overproduced as a televised political convention. Despite the "edgy" host and the "edgy" floor that they played movies on and the "edgy" choice of Antonion Banderas for Official Oscar Balladeer, the whole thing fell flat.

Jamie Foxx totally kicked my ass, though. When he managed to squeeze in a little Ray, a little Sydney, and all that emotional Grandma stuff, it almost made up for Antonio's crooning. If the music had cut off Mr. Foxx, I would have stormed down there myself and shoved the bandleader's baton where the sun don't shine.

On a final note, there is one thing I love about the Oscars, which is getting to see people who've worked hard collaboratively or on projects in the past be truly excited for and proud of one another (the Best Documentary Short Film award was like that last night). It reminds me that, somewhere swimming behind all the airbrushing and light shows, the entertainment industry still contains artists who live to create and convey. I hope that someday I see a comic I've worked with win Best Actor or its equivalent. I can't imagine Jamie Foxx ever imagined such a day would come. Especially not back then.
