New York Comedians' Coalition Announcement
The New York Comedians' Coaltion - an organization of stand-up comics in New York working together to increase the base pay at the city's venues - has announced the following:
The coalition voted today to approve plans to take further action against those clubs who have not proposed any pay increase whatsoever . . . As of today we are asking comedians to stop working these clubs.
The Coalition, which is not a formal union, has said that it will not consider comics who play these four venues scabs if they booked their dates prior to this announcement. If a comic decides to try to take advantage of this work-stoppage and get some dates at these clubs NOW, however...in my opnion, that's a different story.
(Aside: I love longshoremen. Holy shit. And I ESPECIALLY love English longshoremen. They're the greatest labor agitators in the whole world.)
It seems like the Coalition is not releasing the names of the four clubs to the public. They ARE, however, releasing a list of clubs that support their goals.
Here are some of the clubs who ARE working with the Coalition:
- Caroline's
- Comedy Cellar
- Comic Strip
- Gotham
- Laugh Factory
- Laugh Lounge NYC
Other comedy venues (sketch clubs, improvisational comedy clubs, etc.) are also A-OK with everyone, since they're not involved in the current dispute. So go, laugh, have fun!
In fact, GO SEE MY FRIEND BRIAN LONGWELL THIS WEEKEND IN NYC!
He's doing his non-motivational yet compelling "Why Work?" comedic presentation in NYC as part of the StampedeFest at CB's Gallery next door to the legendary CBGB's. Showtime is 7pm on Friday and 10pm on Saturday. The Festival website is www.stampedefest.org with all info on location, getting tickets, etc.
In conlcusion...
